Description

Summer in the Middle East is claustrophobic. The humidity envelops people like clingfilm.
When I awake one night in July to the screech of a telephone, I already know my mother is dead.

‘Leave it,’ I tell my husband, who is halfway out of bed and scrambling for his slippers. We wait for the call to end. The silence afterwards is deafening – worse than the ringing.

The sky outside changes from indigo to sapphire, but Riyadh and I stay still as statues. Eventually, he stretches out on the bed and clasps my hand. He knows, too.

Set in the most volatile region in the world, Refuge is a love-letter to the Middle East and its denizens. It tells the story of a couple at the outbreak of war, forced to flee their homeland and settle in Dublin. Living on their wits, and missing friends and family, they gradually rebuild their lives. When the conflict back home peters out, they must decide whether to stay in Europe or return to the old country.

Beautifully and poetically written, Refuge is a love-story which is simultaneously sensual, tender and affecting – and presents Ireland in a new light, through the eyes of recent arrivals to the country. In short, this is a remarkable debut by a talented new voice who powerfully draws on the rich literary traditions of both Ireland and the Middle East.

Reviews
"There is an innocence to this novella; an unworldliness, in spite of the hard reality of the couple's situation. It is a modern fable about displacement, which smoothly integrates quotes from the Koran and several Persian poets. There are repeat motifs that illuminate small rituals of love and duty with balance and restraint. There are clichés, but they present as curiously appropriate. There is, it seems, an effortless sliding through time that runs contrary to the difficulties the couple must negotiate. The narrative is structured as a series of vignettes that are strangely calm and considerate – the iris opens and closes, opens and closes. These short, evocative episodes remind the reader that stories of displacement are stories about home, however and wherever that home might be created." —Philip Davison, author of The Makeweight, Quiet City and Eureka Dunes
“The relationship between the two main characters stands out vividly and is quite charming. The parts of the novel that are in the author’s own home-place have an assured and authentic feel.” —Carmen Cullen, author of Two Sisters Singing, Hello Love and Daisy, Daisy
"From the Middle East to Ireland to the Middle East and back to Ireland, Fatema Alarabi’s tale is one of courage, resilience and beauty, told in the simplest of language. I read it in one sitting, just couldn’t put it down." —Noel King, poet and author of The Key Signature & Other Stories
